Frequently asked questions

What makes an IoT project succeed in Singapore?

Site reality more than dashboard features. Singapore IoT work spans facilities, logistics, maritime, construction, retail and smart buildings, where connectivity, power, mounting and maintenance access decide outcomes. Ask vendors how they handle site surveys, harsh environments, device management at scale, and who maintains the fleet after deployment — not just what the analytics screen shows.

Which connectivity should I use — Wi-Fi, cellular, LoRaWAN or NB-IoT?

It depends on range, power, bandwidth and site. Wi-Fi suits dense, powered indoor sensors; cellular and NB-IoT suit wide-area or mobile assets; LoRaWAN suits low-power, long-range, low-data sensing. A good vendor selects by use case and coverage rather than defaulting to one technology, and tests connectivity on your actual site before committing.

Do IoT devices need IMDA approval in Singapore?

Radio-transmitting equipment generally must meet IMDA equipment-registration requirements and standards before it can be supplied or used in Singapore. Confirm your devices are compliant, especially for imported hardware. A capable integrator handles or advises on registration and uses approved modules rather than leaving compliance to you.

How is data from sensors handled under PDPA?

If sensors capture personal data — images, location, identifiable patterns — PDPA applies, including purpose limitation and retention. Confirm what each device collects, where it is stored, and whether it leaves Singapore. For people-counting or video sensing, treat it like surveillance: document the purpose and access controls and minimise personal data where possible.

What is the real cost of an IoT deployment over its lifetime?

Hardware is often the smallest part. Budget for connectivity subscriptions, platform and data costs, installation, and — critically — ongoing maintenance, firmware updates and device replacement. Ask vendors for total cost of ownership over the expected fleet life and who owns field maintenance, rather than a per-device sticker price.
